Based on the topics discussed during the workshop, your TEAM CHALLENGE is to develop, pitch, refine and present an idea for a classroom collaboration. Use this template to collect and synthesize ideas.

Project Design Essentials

Project Title: 1984 meets 1948

Participants level/age: Grade 11-12 IB English Literature and Language and Literature and History students

Curriculum focus:Literature in cultural and historical context

Timeline: 2-3 weeks

Learning legacy:

The students will walk away with an understanding that literature and historical events are interconnected.

Curriculum Integration and Alignment:

Guiding Question: What were the social and political issues in 1948 that led George Orwell to write 1984 ?

Project Aims:

students will use 1984 by George Orwell, to reflect on how the social and political issues during 1948, when the author wrote and/or published the work, were push factors in the conception of the book.



Focus Questions:

What is totalitarianism? Who was Stalin? Who designed the apartment blocks in Stalin's Russia? What did these apartment blocks look like? How do these tie in with the apartment block that Winston Smith lives in?

Prerequisites and Skill Levels: Read the first paragraph of ​1984.

Groups will collaborate through Schoology and then hand in a finished project on any multimedia, but with teacher approval.

The project will receive a flat grade, however the individual contribution will be graded separately.

Using Schoology and other multi-media, students from English and History classes are put into groups together developing a dialogue project focusing on the historical and cultural implications of 1984 by George Orwell .
